E pluribus unum, Latin for "Out of many, one", is a motto requested by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere (originally Pierre-Eugčne Ducimetičre) and discovered in 1776 about the Seal of the United States, in addition to Annuit cptis and Novus ordo seclorum, and adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782.[1] The phrase is comparable to some Latin translation of a variation of Heraclitus' 10th fragment, "Out of all factors a single, a single away from all items." A variant from the phrase was utilized in Moretum, a poem attributed to Virgil but while using actual author unknown. Within the poem text, color est e pluribus unus describes the blending of colors into a person. St Augustine applied a variant in the phrase, ex pluribus unum, in his Confessions. At the time of the American Revolution, the exact phrase appeared prominently for the title page of the well-known periodical, The Gentleman's Newspaper,[2][3][4] which collected content articles from a lot of sources into a single "magazine".
